CA4

Description

The CA4 (carbonic anhydrase 4) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

CA4 may refer to: Carbonic anhydrase 4, a protein involved in pH regulation.

Carbonic anhydrase 4 (CA4) plays a crucial role in maintaining pH balance within cells and tissues. It catalyzes the reversible conversion of carbon dioxide into bicarbonate and protons. This activity is essential for various physiological processes, including acid overload removal from the retina and retinal epithelium, and acid release in the choriocapillaris of the choroid. CA4 is also known to stimulate the activity of the sodium/bicarbonate transporter SLC4A4, which contributes to pH homeostasis.

CA4 is also known as CAIV, Car4, RP17.
