Description

The RGS9 (regulator of G protein signaling 9) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

The RGS9 gene produces two protein versions (isoforms), RGS9-1 and RGS9-2, with distinct functions and locations in the nervous system. RGS9-1, found in the retina, aids in returning photoreceptor cells to their resting state after light exposure, facilitating rapid visual processing. RGS9-2, located in the striatum, participates in dopamine-related signaling pathways, crucial for movement coordination and planning. It may also influence the brain's response to opioids like morphine and cocaine.

RGS9 is also known as PERRS, PERRS1, RGS9L.
