Description

The RD3 (RD3 regulator of GUCY2D) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

RD3 is a protein that plays a critical role in the regulation of enzymes involved in nucleotide cycle in photoreceptors. It inhibits the activity of two retinal guanylyl cyclases, GUCY2D and GUCY2F, which are involved in the production of cGMP. RD3 also facilitates the transport of these cyclases to their target sites in the photoreceptor outer segment. Additionally, RD3 upregulates the activity of GUK1, a kinase that is involved in the recycling of GMP and indirectly cGMP. This protein is essential for the survival of rods and cones in the retina.

RD3 protein plays a key role in regulating enzymes involved in nucleotide cycling within photoreceptor cells. It inhibits the activity of GUCY2D and GUCY2F, two enzymes responsible for producing cGMP, and facilitates their transport to specific locations within the photoreceptor. Additionally, RD3 boosts the activity of GUK1, a kinase critical for recycling GMP and indirectly cGMP. This protein is essential for the survival of rod and cone cells in the retina.
