GCNT2

Description

The GCNT2 (glucosaminyl (N-acetyl) transferase 2 (I blood group)) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6.

The GCNT2 gene encodes for the enzyme that creates the blood group I antigen. This enzyme, known as the I-branching enzyme, converts the linear i antigen found in fetuses into the branched I antigen found in adults. Mutations in this gene can lead to the adult i blood group phenotype. There are different forms of this enzyme, produced by alternative splicing.

GCNT2 is also known as CCAT, CTRCT13, GCNT2C, GCNT5, IGNT, II, NACGT1, NAGCT1, ULG3, bA360O19.2, bA421M1.1.
