NRN1

Description

The NRN1 (neuritin 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6.

Neuritin 1 is a protein encoded by the NRN1 gene in humans. It belongs to the neuritin family and is expressed in developing and mature neurons. This protein plays a crucial role in the growth and branching of nerve fibers, a process known as neuritogenesis. Its expression is stimulated by neural activity and neurotrophins. Neuritin 1 is anchored to the cell membrane via a glycosylphoshatidylinositol (GPI) link. While it promotes neuritogenesis, overexpression of Neuritin 1 may contribute to the progression of astrocytoma, a type of brain tumor. Multiple variants of the Neuritin 1 protein are produced due to alternative splicing of the NRN1 gene.

Promotes the growth and branching of nerve fibers in primary hippocampal and cortical cells.

NRN1 is also known as NRN, dJ380B8.2.
