Description

The NRG2 (neuregulin 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 5.

Neuregulin 2 (NRG2) is a protein encoded by the NRG2 gene in humans. It belongs to the neuregulin family, known for their role in growth and differentiation factors. NRG2 interacts with the ErbB family of receptors, driving the growth and differentiation of various cell types, including epithelial, neuronal, and glial cells. The NRG2 gene consists of 12 exons, exhibiting a similar genomic structure to NRG1, another neuregulin family member. While both NRG1 and NRG2 share similarities, they regulate distinct biological processes by targeting different tissue locations and eliciting unique cellular responses. Despite its proximity to the region associated with demyelinating Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, NRG2 is not responsible for this condition. Several alternative transcripts encoding distinct isoforms of NRG2 have been identified.

NRG2 acts as a direct ligand for ERBB3 and ERBB4 tyrosine kinase receptors. It simultaneously recruits ERBB1 and ERBB2 coreceptors, triggering tyrosine phosphorylation and activation of the ERBB receptors. Additionally, it may promote heterodimerization with the EGF receptor.

NRG2 is also known as DON1, HRG2, NTAK.
