NOBOX

Description

The NOBOX (NOBOX oogenesis homeobox) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 7.

NOBOX, also known as newborn ovary homeobox protein, is a protein encoded by the NOBOX gene. The gene is conserved across various species, including chimpanzee, Rhesus monkey, cow, mouse, and rat. It plays a crucial role in the development of follicles and oocyte maturation. In the absence of NOBOX, follicles fail to develop, and oocytes decline, leading to infertility. NOBOX was discovered through an in silico search for novel genes involved in early mammalian folliculogenesis. It is located on chromosome 7q35 in humans and on proximal chromosome 6 in mice. The human NOBOX protein is 14 kb in size and encoded by 8 exons.

NOBOX is a transcription factor that may play a role in oogenesis. It preferentially binds to the DNA sequences 5'-TAATTG-3', 5'-TAGTTG-3', and 5'-TAATTA-3'.

NOBOX is also known as OG-2, OG2, OG2X, POF5, TCAG_12042.
