Description

The NLRC5 (NLR family CARD domain containing 5) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 16.

NLRC5, short for NOD-like receptor family CARD domain containing 5, is a protein located inside cells that plays a part in the immune system. It acts as a pattern recognition receptor involved in the innate immune response against viruses, possibly by regulating interferon activity. Recent research suggests NLRC5 has a positive role in controlling the expression of Major Histocompatibility Class I (MHCI) molecules. This function was further investigated using mice lacking NLRC5, which showed reduced MHCI expression in lymphocytes (particularly T, NK, and NKT lymphocytes). In lymphocytes, NLRC5 resides in the nucleus and drives MHCI gene expression by binding to H-2D and H-2K gene promoters. The NLRC5 gene codes for the NLRC5 protein in humans. It has also been called NOD27, NOD4, and CLR16.1.

NLRC5 regulates the NF-kappa-B and type I interferon signaling pathways, potentially playing a role in the type II interferon signaling pathway as well. This protein contributes to maintaining immune system balance and defending against viral infections.
