SALL1 : spalt like transcription factor 1

Description

The SALL1 (spalt like transcription factor 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 16.

The SALL1 gene provides instructions for making proteins essential for tissue and organ development before birth. These proteins are transcription factors that bind to specific DNA regions to control the activity of other genes. The SALL1 protein acts as a repressor, turning off gene activity by influencing the way DNA is packaged. This process, known as chromatin remodeling, regulates gene expression during development. By controlling gene activity, SALL1 plays a crucial role in the development of hands (especially thumbs), ears, anus, kidneys, and other body parts before birth.

SALL1 is also known as HEL-S-89, HSAL1, Sal-1, TBS, ZNF794.
