Description

The SLC4A4 (solute carrier family 4 member 4) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 4.

SLC4A4, also known as NBCe1, is a membrane transport protein that moves sodium and bicarbonate ions across the cell membrane. This process is known as electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransport, and it has a stoichiometry of 3 bicarbonate ions for every sodium ion. This transporter is involved in bicarbonate secretion and absorption, as well as intracellular pH regulation. It is predominantly expressed in the brain by astrocytes, where it plays a role in regulating brain extracellular pH. Mutations in SLC4A4 have been linked to familial hemiplegic migraine and proximal renal tubular acidosis. There are different splice variants of SLC4A4, with NBCe1-A (kNBC1) being primarily expressed in the kidney, NBCe1-B (pNBC1) being expressed in the pancreas and other tissues, and NBCe1-C being expressed in the brain. SLC4A4 is specifically expressed in the basolateral membranes of proximal tubule epithelia in the kidneys.
