Description
The LZTFL1 (leucine zipper transcription factor like 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 3.
LZTFL1, or Leucine zipper transcription factor like 1, is a protein found in all cells. It is located in the cytoplasm and is encoded by the LZTFL1 gene in humans. LZTFL1 regulates protein movement to the ciliary membrane by interacting with the Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) complex of proteins. Mutations in the LZTFL1 gene are linked to Bardet-Biedl syndrome and it also acts as a tumor suppressor by regulating epithelial-mesenchymal transition. LZTFL1 is located on chromosome 3 at position 3p21.31 and is associated with genetic susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 respiratory failure. The genetic risk factor is inherited from Neanderthals.
