NELFB


Description

The NELFB (negative elongation factor complex member B) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 9.

NELFB is a crucial component of the NELF complex, which plays a significant role in regulating gene transcription. The NELF complex acts by negatively regulating the elongation of transcription by RNA polymerase II, leading to transcriptional pausing. This process involves interaction with the DSIF complex and is counteracted by the P-TEFb kinase complex. Moreover, NELFB might contribute to chromatin unfolding. It is essential for early embryonic development and plays a key role in maintaining the undifferentiated state of embryonic stem cells by suppressing the premature expression of developmental genes. NELFB also facilitates the responsiveness of stem cells to developmental cues, thereby promoting plasticity and cell fate determination. Furthermore, it supports the transcription of genes associated with energy metabolism in cardiomyocytes by facilitating the binding of transcription initiation factors to the promoters of these genes.

NELFB is also known as COBRA1, NELF-B.
