NACAD

Description

The NACAD (NAC alpha domain containing) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 7.

NACAD is a protein that plays a role in preventing non-secretory proteins from being incorrectly targeted to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). It achieves this by binding to nascent polypeptide chains (newly synthesized proteins) as they emerge from the ribosome, blocking their interaction with the signal recognition particle (SRP). The SRP normally directs secretory proteins to the ER. Additionally, NACAD can reduce the affinity of ribosomes for the ER membrane, further minimizing the chance of non-secretory proteins being translocated to the ER.
