MYOCD

Description

The MYOCD (myocardin) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

Myocardin is a protein that in humans is encoded by the MYOCD gene. Myocardin is a smooth muscle and cardiac muscle-specific transcriptional coactivator of serum response factor.

Myocardin is a smooth muscle and cardiac muscle cell-specific transcriptional factor that binds to canonical single or multiple CArG boxes in DNA. It functions as a cofactor for serum response factor (SRF), influencing the expression of SRF-regulated genes. Myocardin plays a critical role in the development of heart tissue (cardiogenesis), urinary bladder formation, and the differentiation of smooth muscle cells (myogenesis). It positively regulates the expression of genes involved in vascular smooth muscle contraction.

MYOCD is also known as MGBL, MYCD.
