MURC
Understanding Muscular Dystrophy: A Comprehensive Guide
Description
Muscular dystrophy (MD) is a group of inherited genetic disorders that cause progressive muscle weakness. It weakens muscles over time, leading to difficulty in movement, breathing, and other bodily functions. Different types of MD affect different muscle groups and progress at varying rates.
Associated Diseases
- Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD): The most common and severe type, affecting mostly boys. It begins in early childhood, causing rapid muscle degeneration.
- Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD): A less severe form of DMD, with a later onset and slower progression.
- Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1): Affects both muscles and other organs, such as the heart, eyes, and gastrointestinal system.
- Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD): Weakens muscles in the face, shoulders, and upper arms.
- Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD): Affects muscles in the hips, shoulders, and legs.
Did you Know ?
- It is estimated that 1 in 3,500 males are affected by DMD, making it one of the most common genetic disorders among males.
