MMP8

Description

The MMP8 (matrix metallopeptidase 8) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

MMP-8, also known as neutrophil collagenase or PMNL collagenase, is a collagen-degrading enzyme found in the connective tissue of most mammals. It is produced by neutrophils and is activated by autolytic cleavage. MMP-8 plays a role in normal processes like development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling. It is also involved in disease processes like arthritis and metastasis. MMP-8 primarily breaks down collagen types I, II, and III. In cancer, low levels of MMP-8 have been linked to increased tumor growth, metastasis, and changes in the immune system.

MMP8 is also known as CLG1, HNC, MMP-8, PMNL-CL.
