Myeloid leukemia factor 1 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the MLF1 gene.
MLF1 plays a role in directing the development of blood cells, specifically favoring the formation of myeloid cells over red blood cells. It inhibits the maturation of red blood cells by blocking their exit from the cell cycle, a process controlled by the protein CDKN1B/p27Kip1. MLF1 also regulates the activity of the COP1 protein, leading to the activation of p53, which then triggers cell cycle arrest. MLF1's ability to bind to DNA suggests it might function as a transcription factor, controlling the expression of various genes within the nucleus.
