MICU2

Description

The MICU2 (mitochondrial calcium uptake 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 13.

MICU2 is a crucial regulator of the mitochondrial calcium uniporter (MCU), essential for controlling calcium uptake by MCU when cytoplasmic calcium levels are low. It forms a disulfide-linked heterodimer with MICU1, working together to stimulate or inhibit MCU activity depending on calcium concentration. MICU2 acts as a gatekeeper, sensing calcium levels via its EF-hand domains. This prevents channel opening at resting calcium levels, avoiding energy depletion and the triggering of cell death.

MICU2 is also known as 1110008L20Rik, EFHA1.
