MGMT

Myasthenia Gravis (MG): An Autoimmune Neuromuscular Disorder

Description

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune disorder that affects the communication between nerves and muscles. It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction, where nerve signals are transmitted to muscles. This leads to impaired muscle function and weakness.

Associated Diseases

MG is often associated with other autoimmune conditions, including:

  • Graves' disease
  • Autoimmune thyroiditis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)

Approximately 200,000 people worldwide are estimated to have MG, with an incidence of 1 in 10,000 to 40,000 people per year.
