METTL9

Description

The METTL9 (methyltransferase 9, His-X-His N1(pi)-histidine) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 16.

METTL9 is a protein-histidine N-methyltransferase that specifically catalyzes the methylation of target proteins at histidine residues, resulting in the formation of 1-methylhistidine (also known as pros-methylhistidine). It preferentially targets proteins containing a His-x-His (HxH) motif, where 'x' is usually a small amino acid. METTL9 has been shown to methylate a variety of proteins, including S100A9, NDUFB3, SLC39A5, SLC39A7, ARMC6, and DNAJB12. The methylation of these proteins by METTL9 may influence their ability to bind zinc and other metals. METTL9 is considered the primary methyltransferase responsible for the 1-methylhistidine modification in cells.

METTL9 is also known as CGI-81, DREV, DREV1, PAP1, hMETTL9.
