Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis (IPN)
Description:
Infectious pancreatic necrosis (IPN) is a highly contagious viral disease that affects salmonid fish, particularly farmed Atlantic salmon. It is caused by the infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV), which belongs to the family Birnaviridae. IPN virus infects the exocrine pancreas, causing severe inflammation, necrosis, and destruction of pancreatic tissue.
Associated Diseases:
IPN is often associated with other viral and bacterial diseases, including:
- Viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS)
- Infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV)
- Vibriosis
- Aeromonas salmonicida infection

IPN outbreaks can cause significant economic losses in the aquaculture industry. In 2019, an IPN outbreak in Chile alone led to an estimated loss of over $120 million.
