Description
The FZD2 (frizzled class receptor 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.
The FZD2 gene provides instructions for making a protein that is essential for development before birth. The FZD2 protein interacts with other proteins, such as those from the DVL genes (DVL1, DVL2, and DVL3), in chemical signaling pathways known as Wnt signaling. These pathways regulate gene activity during development and control cell interactions during organ and tissue formation. As a crucial component of Wnt signaling, the FZD2 protein is thought to be vital for normal skeletal development and potentially other parts of the body.
FZD2 acts as a receptor for Wnt proteins, primarily engaging in the canonical beta-catenin signaling pathway. This pathway involves activating disheveled proteins, inhibiting GSK-3 kinase, promoting nuclear accumulation of beta-catenin, and ultimately activating Wnt target genes. A second pathway involving PKC and calcium fluxes has been observed, but its relationship to the canonical pathway remains unclear. Both pathways appear to involve interactions with G-proteins. FZD2 may play a role in transmitting polarity information during tissue development and differentiation.
