Description

The FGF9 (fibroblast growth factor 9) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 13.

FGF9, encoded by the FGF9 gene, is a member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family. FGF proteins are involved in a wide range of biological processes, including embryonic development, cell growth, morphogenesis, tissue repair, tumor growth, and invasion. FGF9 was identified as a secreted factor that stimulates the growth of glial cells in culture. In the nervous system, FGF9 is primarily produced by neurons and is thought to be important for glial cell development. Expression of the mouse FGF9 gene is regulated by Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling. Mice lacking the FGF9 gene exhibit a male-to-female sex reversal phenotype, indicating a role in testicular embryogenesis. FGF9 is involved in sex determination, lung development, and skeletal development. FGF9 plays a crucial role in male sex development, with its expression in both male and female bi-potent gonads.
