Description

The ARCN1 (archain 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

ARCN1, also known as coatomer subunit delta, plays a crucial role in protein trafficking within the cell. It forms part of the coatomer complex, a cytosolic protein assembly that binds to specific protein sequences (dilysine motifs). This complex interacts with Golgi non-clathrin-coated vesicles, facilitating the movement of newly synthesized proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), through the Golgi apparatus, and ultimately to the trans Golgi network. The coatomer complex is essential for the budding process from Golgi membranes and is required for the retrograde transport of specific proteins back from the Golgi to the ER. Notably, the coatomer‘s recruitment to membranes is dependent on ADP-ribosylation factors (ARFs), small GTP-binding proteins. Beyond its role in protein transport, the coatomer complex also contributes to the structural integrity of the Golgi apparatus, and it influences the processing, activity, and recycling of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptors.
