SLC13A3

Description

The SLC13A3 (solute carrier family 13 member 3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 20.

Solute carrier family 13 member 3 (SLC13A3), also known as sodium-dependent dicarboxylate transporter (NaDC3), is a protein that is encoded by the SLC13A3 gene in humans. Mammalian sodium-dicarboxylate cotransporters transport succinate and other Krebs cycle intermediates. They are categorized into two groups based on substrate affinity: low affinity and high affinity. Both low- and high-affinity transporters play a crucial role in citrate handling by the kidneys. The protein encoded by this gene represents the high-affinity form. Alternative splicing of this gene's transcript produces various isoforms, though the full-length nature of some of these isoforms has yet to be fully characterized.

SLC13A3, also known as NaDC-3 or hNaDC3, is a high-affinity sodium-dicarboxylate cotransporter. It transports dicarboxylates into cells with a probable stoichiometry of 3 Na+ for 1 divalent dicarboxylate, making the process electrogenic. SLC13A3 recognizes and transports a range of substrates with 4-6 carbon atoms, including citric acid cycle intermediates like succinate and alpha-ketoglutarate, as well as other compounds such as N-acetyl-L-aspartate. Notably, SLC13A3 can also transport citrate in a sodium-dependent manner, specifically recognizing the divalent form of citrate rather than the trivalent form found in blood.

SLC13A3 is also known as ARLIAK, NADC3, NaC3, SDCT2.
