Description

The SEC24D (SEC24 homolog D, COPII coat complex component) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 4.

SEC24D is a protein encoded by the SEC24D gene in humans. It belongs to the SEC24 subfamily of the SEC23/SEC24 family, which is involved in vesicle trafficking. SEC24D exhibits similarity to the yeast Sec24p component of COPII, the coat protein complex responsible for vesicle budding from the ER. This protein plays a key role in vesicle shaping, cargo selection, and concentration.

SEC24D is a component of the coat protein complex II (COPII), which plays a crucial role in vesicle formation from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). COPII facilitates the physical deformation of the ER membrane into vesicles and the selection of specific cargo molecules for transport to the Golgi complex. SEC24D contributes to cargo selection within the COPII complex, and in combination with SEC24C, it might exhibit a different cargo preference compared to SEC24A and SEC24B. SEC24D appears to be involved in packaging GPI-anchored proteins via the cargo receptor TMED10 and may also specifically package cargo containing the IxM motif, such as the SNAREs GOSR2 and STX5.
