PPOX : protoporphyrinogen oxidase

Description

The PPOX (protoporphyrinogen oxidase) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

The PPOX gene provides instructions for making protoporphyrinogen oxidase, an enzyme involved in heme production. Heme is crucial for all organs, especially the blood, bone marrow, and liver. It's a component of hemoproteins like hemoglobin, which carries oxygen. Heme production is a multi-step process involving eight enzymes. Protoporphyrinogen oxidase catalyzes the seventh step, removing two hydrogen atoms from protoporphyrinogen IX to form protoporphyrin IX. In the final step, another enzyme adds an iron atom to protoporphyrin IX, producing heme.

The enzyme protoporphyrinogen oxidase catalyzes the six-electron oxidation of protoporphyrinogen-IX to form protoporphyrin-IX.

PPOX is also known as PPO, V290M, VP, VPCO.
