MEIS1

Description

The MEIS1 (Meis homeobox 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 2.

The MEIS1 gene encodes a homeobox protein belonging to the TALE (three amino acid loop extension) family of homeodomain-containing proteins. Homeobox genes, including the well-known HOX genes, are essential for normal development. Some homeoproteins are linked to cancer development. MEIS1 interacts with PBX1 and HOXA9.

MEIS1 regulates the expression of PAX6, activates the transcription of PF4 in conjunction with PBX1 or PBX2, and plays a crucial role in hematopoiesis, megakaryocyte development, and vascular patterning. It may act as a cofactor for HOXA7 and HOXA9 in the development of myeloid leukemias.
