MED6

Description

The MED6 (mediator complex subunit 6) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 14.

Mediator of RNA polymerase II transcription subunit 6 (MED6) is a subunit of the Mediator complex, an enzyme encoded by the MED6 gene in humans. The MED6 protein is essential for activating many RNA polymerase II promoters and is conserved across species, from yeast to humans. MED6 interacts with proteins like Cyclin-dependent kinase 8, Estrogen receptor alpha, MED21, and Thyroid hormone receptor alpha.

MED6 is a component of the Mediator complex, a vital coactivator for regulating transcription of nearly all genes dependent on RNA polymerase II. This complex acts as a bridge, transmitting information from gene-specific regulatory proteins to the core RNA polymerase II transcription machinery. Mediator interacts directly with regulatory proteins to bind to promoters, serving as a platform for the assembly of a functional preinitiation complex that includes RNA polymerase II and the general transcription factors.

MED6 is also known as ARC33, NY-REN-28.
