MB
Description
The MB (myoglobin) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 22.
MB, Mb or M. B. may refer to:
Myoglobin (MB) is a monomeric heme protein primarily responsible for oxygen storage and diffusion within muscle tissues. It reversibly binds oxygen through a pentacoordinated heme iron, enabling efficient oxygen release during periods of increased demand. In addition to its oxygen-binding capabilities, MB also exhibits nitrite reductase activity, regulating the production of bioactive nitric oxide depending on tissue and cellular oxidative conditions. Under stressful conditions like hypoxia and anoxia, MB acts as a pseudoperoxidase, protecting cells against reactive oxygen species.
MB is also known as MYOSB, PVALB.
