LYPD8

Description

The LYPD8 (LY6/PLAUR domain containing 8) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

LYPD8, encoded by the LYPD8 gene in humans, is a protein containing a LY6/PLAUR domain.

LYPD8 is a secreted protein that plays a crucial role in maintaining intestinal homeostasis by preventing the invasion of Gram-negative bacteria into the inner mucus layer of the colon epithelium. It specifically targets flagellated bacteria, like P.mirabilis, by binding to their flagella, thus inhibiting their motility and preventing them from penetrating the epithelial cells. This segregation of bacteria and epithelial cells is essential for preserving the delicate balance of the intestinal environment.
