Description
The LSM8 (LSM8 homolog, U6 small nuclear RNA associated) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 7.
LSM8, a human gene, encodes a protein with a closed barrel shape, composed of five anti-parallel beta strands and an alpha helix. It is part of the LSm family and forms a heteroheptameric ring with six other paralogs, involved in the general maturation of RNA in the nucleus. This protein interacts with LSM2, playing a crucial role in pre-mRNA splicing as part of the U4/U6-U5 tri-snRNP complex involved in spliceosome assembly. LSM8 also contributes to the formation of the precatalytic spliceosome (spliceosome B complex). The LSM2-8 complex specifically binds to the 3'-terminal U-tract of U6 snRNA.
LSM8, as part of the heptameric LSM2-8 complex, plays a crucial role in pre-mRNA splicing. It contributes to the assembly of the spliceosome by being a component of the U4/U6-U5 tri-snRNP complex. Additionally, it functions as part of the precatalytic spliceosome (spliceosome B complex). The LSM2-8 complex specifically binds to the 3'-terminal U-tract of U6 snRNA.
