The LSM7 (LSM7 homolog, U6 small nuclear RNA and mRNA degradation associated) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.
LSM7 is a protein encoded by the LSM7 gene in humans. It belongs to the Sm-like protein family, known for their sequence homology to Sm proteins. Sm-like proteins contain the Sm sequence motif, a crucial structural element that allows them to form stable heteromers, which are essential components of tri-snRNP particles involved in pre-mRNA splicing. LSM7 has been shown to interact with TACC1 and LSM2, highlighting its potential role in various cellular processes.
LSM7 plays a vital role in pre-mRNA splicing by functioning as a component of the U4/U6-U5 tri-snRNP complex, which is essential for spliceosome assembly. Additionally, LSM7 is part of the precatalytic spliceosome (spliceosome B complex). The LSM2-8 complex, a heptameric structure formed by LSM2, LSM3, LSM4, LSM5, LSM6, LSM7, and LSM8, binds specifically to the 3'-terminal U-tract of U6 snRNA. This complex is crucial for the proper assembly and function of the spliceosome.
