Description

The LSM6 (LSM6 homolog, U6 small nuclear RNA and mRNA degradation associated) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 4.

LSM6, a human gene, encodes the U6 snRNA-associated Sm-like protein LSm6. Sm-like proteins are characterized by their sequence homology to the Sm protein family and contain the Sm sequence motif. This motif consists of two regions separated by a linker that folds into a loop.

LSM6 plays a crucial role in pre-mRNA splicing as part of the U4/U6-U5 tri-snRNP complex, which is essential for spliceosome assembly and the formation of the precatalytic spliceosome (spliceosome B complex). The LSM2-8 complex, including LSM6, specifically binds to the 3'-terminal U-tract of U6 snRNA. LSM6 also participates in LSm protein complexes involved in RNA processing, potentially acting as a chaperone to facilitate the interaction of RNA processing factors with their targets. It is a component of the cytoplasmic LSM1-LSM7 complex, which is thought to be involved in mRNA degradation by activating the decapping step in the 5'-to-3' mRNA decay pathway.
