LSM2
Description
The LSM2 (LSM2 homolog, U6 small nuclear RNA and mRNA degradation associated) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6.
LSM2 is a protein encoded by the LSM2 gene in humans. It belongs to the Sm-like protein family, which shares sequence homology with the Sm protein family. Sm-like proteins contain the Sm sequence motif, consisting of two regions separated by a linker that folds as a loop. LSM2 is believed to form a stable heteromer present in tri-snRNP particles, which are essential for pre-mRNA splicing. LSM2 interacts with several other proteins, including DDX20, LSM3, LSM8, and LSM7.
LSM2 plays a crucial role in pre-mRNA splicing by acting as a component of the U4/U6-U5 tri-snRNP complex, which is essential for spliceosome assembly. It also functions as a component of the precatalytic spliceosome (spliceosome B complex). The heptameric LSM2-8 complex, which LSM2 is part of, specifically binds to the 3'-terminal U-tract of U6 snRNA.
