Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
Description
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition in which stomach contents flow back into the esophagus. This can cause a burning sensation in the chest, known as heartburn, and other symptoms such as regurgitation, nausea, and coughing. GERD is a common condition, affecting up to 20% of the population.
Associated Diseases
GERD can be associated with a number of other conditions, including:
- Esophagitis: Inflammation of the esophagus
- Barrett's esophagus: A condition in which the cells lining the esophagus change to resemble those of the intestine
- Esophageal cancer: A type of cancer that develops in the esophagus
