Cervical Cancer
Description
Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the cells of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. It is the fourth most common cancer among women worldwide, with an estimated 604,000 new cases and 342,000 deaths in 2020.
Associated Diseases
Cervical cancer is strongly associated with human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection. Approximately 99% of cervical cancers are caused by HPV. Other risk factors include:
- Multiple sexual partners
- Early age of first intercourse
- Weakened immune system
- Long-term use of oral contraceptives
- Smoking
