Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Description
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive, incurable lung disease that obstructs airflow from the lungs. It is caused by long-term exposure to harmful particles or gases, such as cigarette smoke, air pollution, or occupational dust. COPD makes it difficult to breathe and can lead to serious health complications, including disability and death.
COPD is characterized by the narrowing and thickening of the airways (bronchitis) and the destruction of the lung's air sacs (emphysema). These changes make it difficult for air to enter and leave the lungs, resulting in shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing.
Associated Diseases
- Lung cancer: COPD is a major risk factor for lung cancer.
- Heart disease: COPD can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular problems.
- Diabetes: People with COPD are more likely to develop diabetes.
- Osteoporosis: COPD can weaken bones and increase the risk of osteoporosis.
