Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC)
Description:
Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a life-threatening condition that occurs when there is widespread and uncontrolled activation of the body's clotting system. This can lead to both blood clots and bleeding, as the delicate balance between clotting and anticoagulation is disrupted. DIC can be triggered by a variety of underlying medical conditions, including sepsis, trauma, and certain cancers.
Associated Diseases:
- Sepsis
- Trauma
- Cancer (especially acute promyelocytic leukemia, myelodysplastic syndromes)
- Liver failure
- Pancreatitis
- Snakebites
- Obstetric complications (e.g., placental abruption)
Did you Know ?
Studies have shown that DIC affects approximately 50,000 people in the United States each year and is responsible for about 20% of deaths from sepsis.
