Bronchitis is a condition characterized by inflammation and swelling of the bronchial tubes, the airways that carry air to and from the lungs. It can be either acute or chronic, depending on its duration and severity.
Acute bronchitis is typically caused by a viral infection, such as the common cold or influenza. It develops suddenly and lasts for less than 3 weeks. Symptoms may include:
- Chest congestion
- Cough (productive or non-productive)
- Wheezing
- Shortness of breath
- Sore throat
- Runny nose
- Mild fever
Chronic bronchitis is a long-term condition that lasts for more than 3 months. It is usually caused by smoking or exposure to other irritants, such as air pollution or chemicals. Chronic bronchitis can be difficult to treat and may lead to serious complications, including scarring of the lung tissue, impaired lung function, and increased risk of pneumonia and other infections.
Symptoms of chronic bronchitis may include:
- Persistent cough (usually productive)

- Chest tightness
- Fatigue
- Weight loss
- Bluish tint to the skin (cyanosis)
