LGALS7

Description

The LGALS7 (galectin 7) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.

Galectin-7 is a protein encoded by the LGALS7 gene in humans. Galectins are a family of beta-galactoside-binding proteins involved in cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions. Galectin-7 is specifically expressed in keratinocytes at all stages of epidermal differentiation, including basal and suprabasal layers. Its expression is moderately repressed by retinoic acid. The protein is primarily found in stratified squamous epithelium, particularly in basal keratinocytes, and to a lesser extent in suprabasal layers where it concentrates at cell-to-cell contact sites. Its cellular localization and down-regulation in cultured keratinocytes suggest a role in cell-cell and/or cell-matrix interactions essential for normal growth control.

LGALS7 is also known as GAL7, LGALS7A.
