KRTAP9-9

Description

The KRTAP9-9 (keratin associated protein 9-9) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

KRTAP9-9, a hair keratin-associated protein, is crucial for building a strong and resilient hair shaft. It forms an interfilamentous matrix surrounding keratin filaments in the hair cortex. This matrix consists of high-sulfur and high-glycine-tyrosine proteins, and KRTAP9-9 plays a key role in cross-linking these proteins via disulfide bonds, utilizing its abundant cysteine residues. This cross-linking process provides the hair shaft with its characteristic strength and resistance.

KRTAP9-9 is also known as KAP9.5, KAP9.9, KRTAP9-5, KRTAP9.9.
