KRTAP9-4

Description

The KRTAP9-4 (keratin associated protein 9-4) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

KRTAP9-4, a keratin-associated protein, plays a crucial role in hair structure. It forms an interfilamentous matrix within the hair cortex, where it interacts with keratin intermediate filaments. This interaction is vital for the formation of a rigid and resistant hair shaft. KRTAP9-4 contributes to this rigidity through extensive disulfide bond cross-linking with cysteine residues present in hair keratins. These cross-links are facilitated by KRTAP9-4's high sulfur content, characteristic of high-sulfur keratins.

KRTAP9-4 is also known as KAP9.4, KRTAP9.4.
