KRTAP8-1

Description

The KRTAP8-1 (keratin associated protein 8-1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 21.

KRTAP8-1, a hair keratin-associated protein, plays a crucial role in the structural integrity of the hair shaft. It forms part of the interfilamentous matrix that surrounds hair keratin intermediate filaments in the hair cortex. This matrix, composed of high-sulfur and high-glycine-tyrosine keratins, is essential for the rigidity and resistance of the hair shaft. KRTAP8-1 achieves this function through extensive disulfide bond cross-linking with cysteine residues of hair keratins.

KRTAP8-1 is also known as KAP8.1.
