KRTAP5-8

Description

The KRTAP5-8 (keratin associated protein 5-8) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

KRTAP5-8, a keratin-associated protein, plays a vital role in forming the hair shaft's structure. It integrates with hair keratin intermediate filaments within the hair cortex, forming a matrix. This matrix, comprised of various KRTAPs, contributes to the hair shaft's rigidity and resistance through extensive disulfide bonds between cysteine residues in KRTAP5-8 and hair keratins.

KRTAP5-8 is also known as KRTAP5-2, KRTAP5.8, UHSKerB.
