KRTAP5-3

Description

The KRTAP5-3 (keratin associated protein 5-3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

KRTAP5-3 is a hair keratin-associated protein that forms an interfilamentous matrix within the hair cortex. This matrix plays a crucial role in the structural integrity of hair, providing rigidity and resistance. KRTAP5-3 interacts with hair keratin intermediate filaments through extensive disulfide bond cross-linking, facilitated by its abundant cysteine residues. This cross-linking process is essential for the formation of a strong and durable hair shaft.

KRTAP5-3 is also known as KRTAP5-9, KRTAP5.3.
