KRTAP4-9
Description
The KRTAP4-9 (keratin associated protein 4-9) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.
KRTAP4-9, a member of the keratin-associated protein family, is found within the hair cortex, where it forms an interfilamentous matrix surrounding hair keratin intermediate filaments. This matrix is crucial for the structural integrity of the hair shaft, providing rigidity and resistance. KRTAP4-9 achieves this by extensively cross-linking with hair keratins through disulfide bonds, facilitated by its abundance of cysteine residues. This protein belongs to the high-sulfur and high-glycine-tyrosine keratins, which contribute to the overall matrix composition.
KRTAP4-9 is also known as KAP4.9.
