KRTAP4-2

Description

The KRTAP4-2 (keratin associated protein 4-2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

KRTAP4-2 is a key component of the interfilamentous matrix within the hair cortex, where it interacts with hair keratin intermediate filaments. This interaction is crucial for the formation of a strong and resilient hair shaft. The protein achieves this by forming extensive disulfide bonds with cysteine residues present in hair keratins, contributing to the matrix's structure. The matrix proteins, including KRTAP4-2, are classified as high-sulfur and high-glycine-tyrosine keratins.

KRTAP4-2 is also known as KAP4.2, KRTAP4.2.
