KRTAP3-3

Description

The KRTAP3-3 (keratin associated protein 3-3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

KRTAP3-3 plays a crucial role in hair shaft structure by forming an interfilamentous matrix within the hair cortex. This matrix, composed of hair keratin-associated proteins (KRTAP), encases hair keratin intermediate filaments, providing rigidity and resistance to the hair shaft. The extensive disulfide bonds formed between cysteine residues in KRTAP3-3 and hair keratins are essential for this structural integrity. KRTAP3-3 belongs to the category of high-sulfur keratins, a group of matrix proteins crucial for hair shaft formation.

KRTAP3-3 is also known as KAP3.3, KRTAP3.3.
