KRTAP2-1

Description

The KRTAP2-1 (keratin associated protein 2-1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

KRTAP2-1, a hair keratin-associated protein, contributes to the structural integrity of the hair shaft by forming an interfilamentous matrix within the hair cortex. This matrix consists of KRTAP proteins, including high-sulfur and high-glycine-tyrosine keratins, which interact with hair keratin intermediate filaments. These interactions are facilitated by extensive disulfide bond cross-linking, enabled by abundant cysteine residues present in KRTAP2-1 and hair keratins. This cross-linking process is crucial for the formation of a rigid and resistant hair shaft.

KRTAP2-1 is also known as KAP2.1A, KRTAP2.1A.
